FOUNDATIONS Course Content

  • What is God’s design for spiritual formation through corporate worship? And how have God’s people understood this across Church history? The six lessons of Module 1 prompt immediate engagement with worship as a discipleship ministry as you investigate Scripture, historical documents, and your church ministry context.

  • What does spiritually formative corporate worship look like? In Module 2’s eight lessons, you’ll dig deep into timeless theological truths as you investigate characteristics of spiritually formative worship that transcend common descriptors like style and size. You’ll examine your congregation’s worship patterns as you walk through each lesson, developing and articulating a philosophy of spiritually formative worship, unique to your ministry context.

  • How does understanding your role in the discipleship of God’s people impact your work in worship ministry? Module 3’s lessons guide you through a process of discernment as you consider your church’s worship content and routines. A practical lesson on change provides perspective as you customize a new rubric to add to your evaluative toolbox. You’ll finish the FOUNDATIONS course feeling encouraged and energized for the work God has called you to do.

We learn best from specificity, so students will see examples along the way from Presbyterian history, because the author’s recent doctoral research focused there. If you serve a different branch of the Christian family tree, approach these examples as case studies. A collection of primary sources from other traditions is provided at the end of Module 3, along with helpful research tips.
